Mathematics

Mathematical theories and proofs generally start with assumptions about basic, simple facts which seem evidently true on the basis of empirical evidence or other proof outcomes. These basic mathematical assumptions are called axioms. In mathematics and logic such assumptions take the form of axiom statements in first order languages.
